In Illinois farmers are experimenting with growing various different types of energy grasses to be produced locally into pellets to be used as home heating fuels. Switchgrass and Miscanthus are their current main focus for energy crops. They currently feel Miscanthus has the edge on productivity, however Switchgrass has other advantages including providing a habitat for local wildlife.

The farmers and University understand the benefits of local energy loops, as we do at PelHeat. Locally producing crops and pellets for local use has multiple advantages. It supports the local economy on several levels. And reducing transportation of raw material and pellets is better for the environment and means a cheaper fuel for the end user.

In the video the furnace that burns the pellets is shown, however very little detail is provided on the furnace its self. From our own experience here at PelHeat, we know what its like to burn energy crops, and which pellet stoves and boilers can burn the pellets efficiently. Therefore we have created a guide detailing what to look out for when buying a pellet stove or boiler to make sure it has the most features for the money, and which can burn other biomass pellets such as grass pellets. Please visit www.woodpelletstovesboilers.com to find out more.

The Janfire Flex-a Wood Pellet Burner is a bolt on attachment burner for an existing boiler or for a Janfire boiler. The Janfire Flex-a wood pellet burner can replace the boilers existing gas or oil burner and project a flame horizontally into the boiler chamber. Janfire only approve the wood pellet burner for installation on approved Janfire boilers and pre-approved OEM boilers.

Pellet Burner Heat Output:

Around 20KW

90% Efficiency, although depends on boiler

Biomass Pellet Choice:

The Janfire Flex-a wood pellet burner is fed from a screw auger which drops the pellets down into the burn chamber, ash is then removed from the combustion fan and deposited to the base of the boiler. As the fan provides the only means of ash removal this will not provide sufficient cleaning for high ash and clinker fuels. Therefore the Janfire Flex-a wood pellet burner is only suitable for low ash premium wood pellets.

Below is a profile video of Michael Donnelly in Northern Island, who has installed a 20KW wood pellet boiler in his garage. Michael has connected the wood pellet boiler to his house via underground hot water pipes. The wood pellet boiler will heat the hot water storage tank, then the house will feed from the tank. Michael has a large fuel store to hold 4 tonnes of pellets. The auger to the wood pellet boiler then feeds from this store which Michael states lasts him between 6-8 months.

As Michael states in the video, the location of a wood pellet boiler must be considered for several reasons. The first is a location for the wood pellet boiler with an adequate fuel store close by and with regards to routine and yearly maintenance. Secondly is how to get the hot water to the property where it is needed. At PelHeat we have chosen the same method as Michael and placed the pipes underground to the house. As Michael also states, the ash from the wood pellet boiler is potash, which is a very good soil conditioner.

Biomass whether its wood, straw, grass or another type is a carbon neutral fuel. As it is part of the carbon cycle, as long as new resources are grown no additional carbon dioxide is introduced into the atmosphere. However this is only one aspect of the story, efficient combustion is also vitally important to reduce other particulates and emissions created during the combustion process. To improve air quality and reduce chemically active gases created during combustion, wood and other materials must be upgraded and processed.

Here are ranked combustion techniques in order of worst to best:

1. An open fire of uncompressed biomass (wood logs, grass, straw)
2. An open fire of compressed biomass (pellet stove)
3. A contained fire (stove) of uncompressed biomass (wood logs, grass, straw)
4. A contained fire (stove) of compressed biomass (pellet stove)
5. Gasification Technology which pellets are an ideal fuel for

The order of these combustion techniques based on combustion efficiency also correlates to heat capture efficiency and useable heat. Gasification can produce gas to burn in a stove, or provides an opportunity to use the gas in an internal combustion engine to generate electricity.

Pellet Stove Efficiency

Upgrading resources into a pellet and burning in a pellet stove provides more complete combustion of the material and more heat is produced. A stove therefore is means on a small scale to use a carbon neutral fuel and still achieve good combustion and heat output. The stove can produce enough heat for the entire house, and the stove can be an attractive focal point.

In certain circumstances installing the wood pellet boiler within the property is not practical or possible. This may be due to a lack of space, or concerns over boiler cleaning and ash. Some wood boiler manufactures and retailers have realised this, and now provide boiler energy boxes and pods to keep the wood boiler and pellet hopper separate from the property and pipe the water in. This is similar to our setup with our Tatano boiler, which is stored in an out building and sends hot water to the house via underground pipes.

Storing the wood boiler separately from the house has advantages, including the ones mentioned above. Another advantage is when it comes to the annual boiler clean. Even very low maintenance premium pellet boilers require an annual service and through clean. If this is carried out in the property this could be more difficult.

Another advantage tends to be with the hopper size. When a wood boiler is placed within the property only a fairly small hopper is possible and an external hopper is necessary. Also having a large hopper within the property is a poor use of valuable floor space. With a separate energy box or pod a large hopper is built into the pod.

ÖkoFEN and TRECO both provide solutions

Fröling are an Austrian pellet boiler company, and they produce high efficiency, low maintenance pellet boilers. Fröling pellet boilers are aimed at the premium end of the pellet boiler market. They are trying to replicate the low maintenance of an oil or gas boiler, as their description states, “the operator is left with practically nothing to do. Conveniently empty the ash box two or three times a year – and that’s it. The boiler takes care of everything else.”

Heat Output:

15-25 KW

Biomass Choice:

To offer this level of ultra low boiler maintenance does come at the cost of fuel flexibility. The boilers are only suitable for premium wood pellets with very low ash percentages.

Maintenance Features:

Fully automatic feeding, ignition, boiler cleaning and ash removal

Safety thanks to patented and thus unique pellet valve

After pellets have been produced, storage is the next step. Pellets must obviously be kept away from moisture, so whatever the storage solution this is the main criteria. The current most common form of storage is the plastic bag, 16-20kg sacks that are easy to handle and load into the pellet boiler or stove. How often you have to load your stove or boiler depends on its pellet hopper capacity. You will find this figure listed on all the stoves and boilers I include on the blog.

Plastic pellet bags do their job well, however they do have their disadvantages. Firstly there is the waste issue created by the bags, and secondly the manual handling required by the user. Lifting 16-20kg sacks is reasonable for most people, however unsuitable for someone people, for example the elderly. Also some people simply do not wish to have the hassle of load a hopper every day or every few days.

Pellet storage tanks are quite popular in Europe and are becoming more popular in the UK and US. These pellet storage tanks further replicate the convenience of oil boilers, to keep the maintenance or the pellet boiler or stove as low as possible. The tank is loaded with loose pellets, which are then feed into the boiler on demand.

The pellet storage tank transports pellets to the boiler or stove via three possible methods. These include a fixed screw auger, flexible screw auger or suction system. The capacities of the tanks varies on the size of the pellet burner requirements and how often the user wishes for deliveries. Some tanks can hold a month or a few months supply, while others can hold an entire years supply.

The pellet tank could be loaded with pellets empted from bags, however when available a pellet tanker delivery is more suitable. A pellet tanker delivery operates similarly to an oil delivery with the pellets blown into the pellet storage silo. With regards to producing your own pellets with the PelHeat Mobile Pelletizer, a pellet storage tank also makes sense. As soon as the pellets you produced have cooled they could then be placed directly in the tank, removing the need to bag the pellets. Below are some examples of pellet storage tanks.

ÖkoFEN Pellematic wood pellet boilers are very low maintenance and stylish pellet boilers. These boilers are targeted at the premium end of the wood pellet boiler market, they have sophisticated cleaning features and come is variety of colours. ÖkoFEN even provide a boiler that produces between 2-8 KW’s, which is the smallest pellet boiler I’ve ever heard of. ÖkoFEN state this small boiler would be used in a small or very well insulated house.

Heat Output:

The ÖkoFEN Pellematic boiler range comprises of the small 2-8 KW model up to units that can produce 224 KW.

ÖkoFEN Biomass Pellet Choice:

ÖkoFEN have designed these units to burn only premium wood pellets, therefore pellets with a very low ash content below 1%. The Pellematic boiler does feature an automatic cleaning feature, where the boiler will clean its self every day. The boiler also features an ash compression system and easy to handle ash box. The boiler uses an auger to fill the ash box and the operator empties the ash box when required. Operating the ÖkoFEN on premium wood pellets, the boiler ash box will be empted once every few months.

TRECO are the company we purchased our Tatano pellet boiler from, and they have just updated their website with lots of new and interesting information.

Boiler Products Section

There is a now a detailed products section including their range of Guntamatic boiler, Tatano boiler and Ecotek pellet boiler. There is also information on their boiler pods and boiler fuel stores.

Biomass Boiler Technology

The website now gives more of an overview of how and why biomass should be used. Tables are included to give examples between the different energy contents of different biomass materials. For example the increased energy density of pellets over logs and wood chip.

Fuel Comparator

This is one of the best features of the new website. In the fuel comparator you enter the following information.

The size of your property (50m2 to 300m2)

How well insulated it is (3 Options)

Estimate how much you use the boiler (Hours, Days, Months)

Enter the price you pay for Pellets

Then enter what the current Oil, LPG, Electricity or Natural Gas prices are

Once you have entered this information into the simple form, it will calculate how much you can save on using a pellet boiler.

Please visit the TRECO website to find out more: www.treco.co.uk

Below is a picture of our Tatano boiler purchased from TRECO

85% Efficiency

Boiler Biomass Pellet Choice:

The Harman PB105 boiler looks like it could be able to handle a wide variety of biomass pellets beyond premium wood pellets. Firstly the boiler burn pot is Haman’s patented pro feeder, which is used in the pellet stoves that preformed well in the grass pellet tests conducted by Cornell University. The boiler has also been designed for easy access to the burn pot, therefore any clinker problems can be removed, and cleaning should be easier. Finally the boiler has an extra large ash pan, which is ideal for high ash pellet fuels such as grasses and straws.
